Google Display: Ads Placement to Improve Average Click Through Rates: Best CTR
79Average Click through Rate (CTR)
The average click through rate of Hubpages is around 1.5% that means if you get 1000 organic views to your hubs there are chances that 15 person will click on one of the ads placed by Google. But the clicks through rates differ from hub to hub, author to author. In a rough estimate it can be said that the CTR ranges from 0.3% to 4%. Given that an author is getting enough organic views the click through rate (CTR) depends largely on three factors. One of those is of course luck but we have control over the two other factors. Controlling these are the main steps of on page optimization. The factors are as following:
- Position of Google Ads placement
- Relevancy of Ads by Google
The aim of this hub is to help the hubbers to improve click through rate and boost up their Google earning by some step by step on page optimization tips. If you are not yet a hubber click here to join hubpages, the great community of freelance writers.
How to Improve Click through Rates
I have already mentioned that ads placement position and relevancy of ads by Google are very important factors of on page optimization to increase the click through rates. And we can control both of these. Let’s see how to increase the click through rate for your hubpages.
The first factor is Google ads placement. It is to be noted that in each hub Google display ads in two type of ads blocks within the text of the hub when given spaces. They are:
- 360x250 size rectangular ads by Google block: It appears beside the first text capsule that contains at least 120 words.
- 480x50 size linear ads by Google block: It appears at least after two of any capsules and appears horizontally between two capsules without intersecting any of them.
So, Google need spaces and the author is the one to decide where to leave space for ads by Google. Many perhaps most of the new hubbers are not aware of the fact and this is where they suffer from a poor click through rate even after getting a good amount of organic traffic. Now, we know that the online surfers have a very short span of patience and they want thing quickly and readily. They won’t scroll down to the bottom of your page all the time and will move away from the page either hitting the back button or clicking on of the ads by Google. So, you would want the ads by Google to be placed on top of a hub to increase the click through rate. And the 360x250 size is the best block of ads by Google to be clicked when placed on the top right corner of a hub. To place it on top of the hub you have to maintain the following things:
- Insert at least 120 words in the first text capsule.
- Don’t put an image or any other capsule beside or above the text capsule.
You have the first thing done. You should look for the second and linear block of ads by Google as closer as possible now. The most popular position of placing it is somewhere after and near the big rectangular ads block. But I am experimenting different position of ads placements. See the images below to get an idea on how Google display ads. I am explaining two options here, look more in images.
Google Ads placement : Option 1
Option 1: Linear block of Ads by Google will appear on top of the hub.
- Take a text capsule and leave it totally blank
- Take another text capsule and insert a capsule subtitle. If you write the subtitle there will be a little white space between the capsule and ads. To avoid it don’t write the subtitle rather put it in the text box and select Heading 2 from the format menu.
- Insert the rest of the text in at least 2 text capsules.
- Don’t place an image or other capsule before the fourth text capsule.

Google Ads placement: Option 2
Option 2: Linear block of Ads by Google will appear after second text capsule.
- Take a text capsule and insert at least 120 words in it. Don’t go much over 120 words.
- Take another text capsule and insert one or only few sentences.
- Insert the rest of the content in as many capsules as you wish.
- Don’t place an image or other capsule before the third text capsule.

Facts About Click Through Rate
Now the page is optimized in terms of the position of ads placement. The second factor is the relevancy of ads by Google. If the ads are not relevant readers are least likely to click one of those. You simply have to do two things for that.
- Choose tags that are relevant to your content.
If you don’t know the proper keyword research techniques learn it properly.
- Don’t choose tags that have no or very little advertisers’ competition. If no one is competing for the tags you have used there are chances that your content will run out of ads and irrelevant tags will be shown. You can see the competition in Google adwords: keyword research tool.
There are few more things to remember when calculating click through rate. They are:
- There is a niche effect on click through rate. Usually literature is a low click niche.
- The traffic from social bookmark never or very hardly clicks on ads. Search engine traffics are the main source of traffic that clicks on your ads.

I have been wondering about this for a long time. Last month I had more than 2000 AdSense views and exactly one click--even more pathetic than usual. Your hub is the first really practical explanation of ad placement and its effect on CTR I have encountered. Methinks it's time to start editing some of the hubs and blog posts with the best traffic.
Thanks for the great information I couldn't get the Option 2 to work though - but great information
This is the best tip I have read on Hubpages. My earnings were really low, because I didn't ave any ads on my Hubs. Then I started with a text capsule first with about 120 words in then another text capsule and my CTR is now the avarage 2-3%. So thank you for that.
This is the clearest explanation of how to creat ad blocks that I have seen yet. Good Hub and good job. Thanks
Excellent hub. These tips are great!
I'm going to try these suggestions on some of my hubs today! Thanks for the very useful information and for answering some questions I've had about ad placement.
Very good hub, I must say my main efforts now are to get that ad at the top-right. But I'll try these techniques as well to influence the position of the horizontal ad.
I am definitely going to try these techniques. The information here is very good advice. I hadn't thought too much about the placement of the linear block of ads.

Thanks a lot! Finally I found the answer to the question why most good hubs have the google ads block at the top right of first capsule and how to achieve that!
For some reason I had trouble to get it, probably because I had a tendency to create a very short first capsule or put images next to it. Need to change it now!
Btw the second block of ads doesn't appear for anyone using HP ad programm so at least there is no need to worry about positioning this one :)
